Realignment FAQs

Q.  Why is GSUSA realigning nationally?

A.  Realignment will strengthen the infrastructure and resources of the organization at all levels including fundraising, staff and volunteer support, public relations, and property management. Change has been in Girl Scouting from its very founding when Juliette Gordon Low changed the terminology from “Girl Guide” to “Girl Scout.”  Girl Scouts pride themselves on their ability to change to meet the needs of girls.

Q.  Will the way we identify ourselves as Girl Scouts Change?

A.  No.  The values of the Girl Scout Movement, as expressed in the Girl Scout Promise and Law, are still the base we will use to identify ourselves.

Q.  What areas will be realigning in Southeastern Michigan?

A.  Four Councils will be merging virtually in total:  Fair Winds, Macomb-Otsikita, Metro Detroit, and Waterways. Additionally, the new Southeastern Michigan Council will be gaining areas currently served by the Huron Valley and Maumee Valley Councils.

Q.  What will happen to my troop number?

A.  This decision will be made during the realignment process, so there is no definite answer to that question.  When GSUSA has experienced mergers in the past, it has been effective to add one digit to the council’s existing troop numbers.  This may or may not happen with our merger.
